Collective Culture

Definiton: A culture that places emphasis on family, work, and community

Shameless is a collective culture that recognizes community and family. Throughout the show the south-side neighborhood is said to be a community and the characters say that where they grew up, has made them who they were today. This culture also places an emphasis on family, which the Gallaghers show very well. They have a very strong family dynamic and will do anything to support and help each other. The people who watch the television show Shameless can also be considered a collective culture. There are many people that get together on the night that the show airs. These people can be friends or family that come together and spend time together, just to watch a TV show.

A collective culture is when people believe they need to be responsible to their families, friends and communities (Floyd, 2017). These people have high exceptions on loyalty and not to be individualistic at all. This can impact communication greatly by avoiding conflict or trying to meet everyones needs, even at their own expense (Floyd, 2017).
