Social Norms

Definition: expectations or rules that guides a persons behavior in a culture

Some of the social norms of Shameless include drinking and doing drugs. In some of the opening episodes the young Gallagher boys are smoking weed out of a tobacco bowl. Smoking marijuana to the Gallagher boys is an everyday thing because it was a substance that they were raised around, and was taught was ok to use. Alcohol is another social norm on Shameless. The underage high schoolers go to the local bar and drink with family and friends because it is something that they are accustom too and is a part of their social norm. They are accustom to drinking because both of their parents drink on a very regular bases.

Social norms are the rules or expectations that create people behaviors in a social group (Floyd, 2017). Some social norms might include different types of greetings, being polite and different types of phrases (Floyd, 2017).
