Need for Control
Definition: our motivation to maintain some degree of influence in our relationships
Because Fiona is the mother-figure of the Gallagher’s, it makes sense that she would want to have some control in their lives. But, because of her need for control, she often gets shut out by her siblings. She frequently forgets that she is their sister, not their mother. Fiona tries to intervene in every aspect of her siblings’ lives, even though it hardly ever works. Fiona’s need for control derives from the fact that she has been in charge of her siblings her entire life.

Need for control is our motivation to have influence over our relationships (Floyd, 2017). This means that we like to make our own decisions in our relationships. The less control we have in our relationships the less satisfied we feel (Floyd, 2017).
