Avoiding

Defintion: A strategy for managing conflict that involves ignoring or falling to deal with the conflict

Debbie is the avoider in the Gallagher family. Whenever she has a conflict with anyone, it doesn’t get addressed; not passively, not indirectly, she just ignores it. There are many different examples of Debbie avoiding her problems. She avoids going home when she gets into an argument with Fiona, she moves in with Queenie when Fiona doesn’t approve of her baby, and she avoids Monica when they get into an argument about staying home. Debbie’s biggest solution is avoidance.

Avoiding involves a low concern for oneself and others (Floyd, 2017). It also avoiding conflict and hoping that it will go away (Floyd, 2017). When someone avoids conflict, it often makes it worse.
