Reflected Appraisal

In season 1, Karen (Lip’s reckless love interest at the time) gets into an argument with her father, Eddie, who is disappointed in her for all of the sexual experience/habits that he finds out that she has had. He can no longer think of her as his innocent daughter; instead, he thinks of her as a hopeless sex addict. After ‘rekindling’ their relationship using his wallet, he brings her to a born-again-virgin program held by the church. There, he finds out just how many sexual adventures Karen has had and publicly outs her as a “whore”. Because Eddie sees Karen as an incompetent, unsavable young woman, he thinks of himself as a failed father- he later kills himself.

Defintion: The way people think of and see us

Reflected appraisal is way that we think other people see and think of us (Floyd, 2017). This process can have impact on our self-concept by seeing how others describe us and then thinking of our selves the same way.
