Need for Affection
Definition: the need to have people in our lives who love and appreciate us
In season 5, Debbie meets a boy named Derek, who, like many other of Debbie’s love interests, she becomes overly attached to. Debbie wants to feel loved and needed by anyone and everyone who will give her the attention. She goes overboard when she becomes pregnant with Derek’s baby, on purpose, without his knowledge, and refuses to abort. She feels that if she has a baby with him, he will have to love and appreciate her, which we find out in season 6, that that is not the case; Derek flees the state, leaving Debbie a single-mother.

Need for affection is the need to have others love and care about you in your everyday life (Floyd, 2017). Not only do we need to receive love and affection from others, we also need to return the same ideas to others. This can better our self-esteem and can help our communication over time (Floyd, 2017).
