Indirect Conflict

Definition: The expression of conflict through negative behaviors that ignore the underlying disagreement.

Indirect conflict presents itself between Lip and Ian. The boys are in an ongoing argument in season two because of a misunderstanding by the head of the Army. Ian gets mad at Lip because he got offered to be a higher-up in the Army. Ian is hurt because he thought that Lip tried to get himself enrolled, but in all reality, Lip was trying to get Ian in. Throughout the next few episodes, Ian and Lip don’t talk to each other; they insult each other under the radar and avoid the problem. It eventually gets resolved when the boys get into a physical fight and decide to get over it.

Indirect conflict is the expression of conflict through negative behaviors that ignore underlying disagreement (Floyd, 2017). Because of indirect conflict, arguments will most likely never get resolved.
