Vocalics

Definition: characteristics of voice that conveys meaning

When Carl is in the process of being expelled from school Fiona and him have a sit down conversation. The viewer can hear the vocalics in her voice as she expresses anger and frustration without actually telling him that she is. Carl can understand that he is in trouble because of the tone of her voice. Carl might respond with the opposite vocalics. His tone might be sad, or upset because he is getting disciplined by his older sister.

Vocalics are the characteristics/ tone of your voice that convey meaning in conversation (Floyd, 2017). This helps us realize that the words go along with the meaning behind them.
