Downward Communication
Defintion: messages sent to people at lower levels of an organization, such as subordinates
Downward communication is when messages are sent to people at a lower level (Floyd, 2017). This communication is clear and instructive. This type of communication is usually used in the work place, from parents to children, and teachers to students.
At Fiona’s job, she has been caught stealing pie by giving it to her family and not putting it on the bill at the end of the meal. Her employer catches her and pulls her aside to talk to her about the missing item on the receipt. He talks to her in a condescending tone telling her to not let it happen again or there will be consequences. Because it is her boss and not a co-worker, it is considered downward communication.
