Dialect Tensions 

Definiton: conflicts between two important but opposing needs or desires

Mickey and Ian experience autonomy versus connection dialectical tensions in season 3. At this point, Ian is going through a lot and runs off to try to find himself. Mickey is left at home constantly worrying and searching for Ian. Their relationship subsides at this point in the show. Mickey wants to be close to Ian so bad, but Ian keeps blocking him out because of his own mental illness problems. Mickey and Ian have a rickety relationship throughout the entire show; dialectic tensions of many kinds are a reoccurring with problem with them.

Dialect tensions are when two opposing needs come into conflict (Floyd, 2017). This is very common when two people are in a close relationship. This happens with romantic relationships, friendships and in families.
