Out-Group

Defintion: A group of people with whom one does not identify

An out-group in Shameless are the people who go to college with Lip at MIT. These people are an out-group from the south-side because most of them have money and do not share the same identities with those who live in the south-side. Lip does not identify with any of these people at MIT because he feels they are ungrateful and did not have to work as hard as he does. Lip also does not come from a rich family so he has to work his way through college, unlike a lot of the other students at MIT.

An out-group is a group that someone does not see themselves fitting into (Floyd, 2017). This may mean not looking the same or acting the same as others in the social situation (Floyd, 2017).
