Social Roles

Definiton: behaviors that are expected of someone in a particular social setting

Lip and his professor Helene at a dinner party are a good example of social roles. Lip is from he south-side where they do not have manners or even own a suit. Lips professor Helen invites him to a fancy dinner party, where Lip is forced to conform to Helens social roles. Some of those social roles include wearing a suit, having manners (not swearing, saying please & thank you, etc.). Lip is not used to these social roles and feels very out of place. He has to wear clothes he is uncomfortable in and has to use manners that he doesn’t use in his every day social life. Another example of social roles in Shameless are when Fiona gets an office job. She has to wear professional clothing and be nice to the customers over the phone (even when they are not being nice to her). Fiona has to form to these social roles to keep her job, so she can continue to support her family.

Social Roles are behaviors that expected of us in a social situation (Floyd, 2017). These roles are can have an affect on the ways that others see us.
